A Llanelli woman pretended to be a naturist to get alongside a retired businessman and con him out of £50,000, a judge has been told.
Moira Etchells, aged 45, pretended she needed the money to set up a business artificially inseminating cows and trimming horses hooves.
But she simply treated herself to a new £35,000 Land Rover and banked the rest.
Etchells, of John Street, admitted fraud. She was jailed for 18 months, suspended for two years.
Craig Jones, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court how businessman Ian Chatting-Tonks retired to Spain after a successful business career in the motor trade.
But his wife died and he searched for a new partner. He was a keen naturist and joined Naturistfriends.com, where he saw a profile posted by Etchells.
She claimed to be working on a dairy farm although that was “complete nonsense.” After an exchange of emails Mr Chatting-Tonks paid for her to fly to Alicante where she joined him in his jacuzzi but, to his surprise, would not take off her swimming costume.
Court stories you might have missed
Etchells returned to Wales and persuaded him to back a business adventure which would enable her to visit Spain regularly.
Mr Chatting-Tonks sent her a total of £50,000 and Etchells assured him the business was progressing well.
But he became suspicious, partly because she would not give him her address or landline telephone number. Matters came to a head in February, 2014, when Mr Chatting-Tonks wanted to visit her in Wales but she refused. He demanded his money back but Etchells fobbed him off before telling him she had moved to Ireland, which was untrue.
Mr Chatting-Tonks contacted Dyfed Powys police and on being told a complaint was being investigated she repaid the £50,000 in full, partly by selling the Land Rover.
Judge Geraint Walters said he found the case “truly bizarre.”
Etchells’ talk about “artificial insemination and horses hooves” had been “complete nonsense” and she had never even worked on a farm.
He said he was surprised that alarm bells did not ring when Etchells proved reluctant to take part in naturism despite enrolling in a dating website for naturists.
